Laptop Buying Guide

If you are unsure what laptop you should buy, then here is our little laptop buying guide. One thing you will notice if you are searching for a laptop is that there are countless different brands and models out there. So picking a laptop which is suitable for your specific needs is not an easy task. There is a lot of jargon surrounding the different features of laptops – and this little guide will not be able to go into so much detail, but we will try and cover the basics to make your decision a little bit easier.

You will probably already have a budget in mind, and if you do so, then that is good. If not, then think what the maximum you can spend is. If reading this guide makes you spend a little more than you intended, or even a little less, just remember the most important thing is buying a laptop that will do the job. By that we mean, sometimes it is a good investment to spend a £100 more, if it means you will be able to use the laptop for what you want it for and therefore hang onto it a little bit longer.

So with the budget briefly discussed, the next most important question is – what do you need the laptop for? For the sake of simplicity, we will divide laptops into two categories. The gaming/home/multimedia laptops (category 1), these are more powerful and more expensive. Then we have the work/internet/student laptops (category 2), which are normally less powerful and less expensive. Have a think about what you need the laptop for now. It may be the case that you require it for multimedia purposes (viewing movies/editing videos) as well as work/business. In which case, your requirements come under the first category. If you only need a laptop for writing essays and internet use, then you fall into category 2.

Generally speaking, with a good category 1 laptop you will be looking to pay at least £400 – but normally £500 or more. For category 2 laptops, you will be able to buy laptops as cheap as £250. It really comes down to exactly what you need it for.

Laptops for multimedia/gaming/family use tend to be bigger and bulkier and are harder to carry around. The chances are this sort of laptop will normally be left in one place. You will need a large hard drive, a quick processor, and also a good graphics and sound card. Such laptops may also be able to connect to your TV and have other such useful features. For the best quality in this range you will need to spend £600.

Laptops for internet/work/light business use, do not need to be as high spec. Such laptops tend to be much more portable and you will find that they are normally netbooks, or smaller 15 inch laptops. They sometimes still do have a very good spec, but they are unable to handle gaming and other intensive multimedia tasks (due to not having a good enough graphics card or less RAM). However, they are perfect for normal day to day use that will normally see you moving around with them and accessing the internet. For the best quality in this range you will need to spend £400 or more.

The purpose of this short guide was to not bombard you with too many technical terms and too much jargon. Afterall, if you have done some searching you will find that information such as that is available everywhere. It was to give you a very basic way of determining what sort of laptop will be right for you and what you should be aiming to spend. We hope you have found it useful, and we hope the simplicity was refreshing as that was the aim.

When you purchase buy now pay later laptops remember you are judging the laptop based on how good it is and whether it fits your requirement – however, since you will be paying back in installments or at a later date, we do recommend that you pay that little bit more to get something of better quality that will last.
